Sullivan’s musical journey began during his high school years at North Springs Charter School of Arts and Sciences in the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody, where he formed a band called ‘The Disciples’. In 1986, his drumming talents caught the attention of local songwriters Chris and Rich Robinson at a Disciples performance. The Robinson brothers quickly recruited Sullivan to become the drummer for their band ‘Mr. Crowe’s Garden’.
Sullivan’s time with Mr. Crowe’s Garden was brief but significant. He performed with the band in many Atlanta clubs and played on the early demos for A&M Records that would eventually help the group, now renamed The Black Crowes, secure their first recording contract with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings. According to Steve Gorman, who later became The Black Crowes’ longtime drummer, Sullivan left Mr. Crowe’s Garden to join Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ as they were being signed by Island Records. This opened an opportunity for Gorman as he was asked to fill in for the second demo session that would begin The Black Crowes’ career.
